We're Twittering Away our Time...is it worth it?

OK, so we got on the Twitter bandwagon...and still wondering if it will lead to real value. Seriously, Ashton Kutcher reached over a million followers the other day and proclaimed this is the new way of communiting information. If people like Ashton Kutcher are going to be delivering the news (which, of course, is all about themselves) then I want no part of it.

But, if we can use this audience to leverage our own products and services...then maybe it is. Twitter demands you build a relationship first...not a very personal one, but one that sees you give before you get. We're doing that by offer a client of our Denver Web Design services some consulting in the use which includes providing value, linking to their blog and offering answers to questions asked. It's a trial run...but interesting to see what happens.!

We're Twittering Away our Time...is it worth it?

Denver Web Design

I've just signed on a new client recently. They found my business using Google search for Denver Web Design and we've had an easy road to getting to a contract.

Now my nemesis...Some Guy...has all sorts of ideas for them. He thinks it would be cool to have the products list in Flash - text which fades to a picture of the product and then changes to new text and a new picture and so on and so on.

Who are these guys and how do they get someone to listen to them when they make suggestions as lame as this! I can read the scenario now...a graphic designer that has learned how to do Flash. They don't know one thing about Denver Web Design but since they know graphic design; they pretend to be the new web experts.

It's aggravating for me but if you heard the complaints of clients over the years, who thought they were hiring someone who knew this confusing Internet world, you would be amazed. The kid next door, someone's brother, their neighbor, an IT guy out of work...the list goes on.

True web development experience is beyond the knowledge of these self made designers/developers but the consuming public still has a lot to learn about the differences. So this is a post to just say; be wary. Ask for credentials, experience, satisfied customers. Actually, first contact real companies, not just 'some guy' - no different than your CPA or attorney...you wouldn't trust those facets of your business to a kid or someone out of work, would you?

Wow, it's been a long time, been Twittering about and seeing a lot of faces. So far, it's allowed me to spend some money on new goods, but it is a bit addictive and reminds of first foray onto the Internet; you roam about a lot and get nowhere really important! Wondering just how to incorporate into my site for Denver Web Design and use successfully...but that's another night of no sleep, so not now!

Shopping made Simple

There are a million shopping carts available to users who want to try and sell products online. I've used one provided by my web development company, Kinetic Webs, that has been great. We can manage our inventory, do promotions and include upsell promotions for items.

But the best result are the search engine results we're seeing. After only a couple of weeks of having our inventory included, we're getting daily traffic and sales, often seeing our site positioned ahead of the companies selling us their products! Take a look at www.vinoluci.com and see for yourself how good it looks and how easy it is to navigate. We're very pleased!

Content Management Systems...seems easy enough to understand, if you are already in the web business that is!

Most people we meet don't have a clue what those words mean...and how it can unlock a whole new world of use for their website once the thought of paying hourly fees is not a part of making minor administrative changes.

Let's be honest...no web developer wants to dot the 'i' that was forgotten or cross the 't' - I get those jobs and cringe at the thought. No client wants to pay our rates to do those jobs, but in lieu of having someone on staff who can learn a program, they've been stuck.

No more...there are a wealth of systems out there that will allow you to make your own changes to your text and images (content). Some good and some very bad, so spending some time making sure you pick the right product is important.

Some clients just need the occasional tweak, they add a calendar item, maybe a new photo occasionally; others need to make changes daily. The beauty is that no matter what it is, for a cost that's less than one billable hour of a web developer's time...they can change their site whenever they want, how often they want, at any time they want.

We've got a couple of options, depending on budget. So, if you need some assistance, even with understanding what it all means and the options available, please contact Kinetic Webs, a Denver Web Design firm that specializes in Content Management Systems (CMS).

Domain Name Services

One more morning of walking a client through the quagmire of a domain name transfer. Transfers should be like gas pumps...some reasonable expectation that even a novice will be able to figure out how to use the service....but that's just not so.

And that's where I get involved. We're a Denver Web Design company, not a Domain Transfer Company; but I've had days when I spend more time on the transfers than anything else. The current registrar doesn't reply to inquiries; they don't have an auth code...heck the worst case scenario is that all calls went offshore and any real need was to have been addressed via email by upper level support...which we never heard from Client finally gave up and just bought a new domain name as the domain was tied to hosting which she no longer wanted.

We belong to some networking groups and if asked to give a short promo on my services; the single most important thing I can tell clients, friends or associates is this, "BUY YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME, KEEP IT UPDATED WITH A CURRENT EMAIL ADDRESS, AND FILE THE USER AND PASSWORD SOMEWHERE THAT YOU CAN LOCATE IT!"

Not to yell, but seems that very typically none of those happen in the course of a purchase and then we get called to help; so I'm making it my own personal mission to spread the word!
